"The House of the Rising Sun" — a ballad older than the United States itself, reimagined as a dark rock lament for a generation that came home different, or did not come home at all.

A haunting arrangement of the folk song that echoed across every American war of the 20th century — and became inseparable from the memory of Vietnam.

▶️ Historical Songs & Rare Voices Collection:
https://www.youtube.com/playli....st?list=PLzKgdMMjRxD

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

📜 THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Nobody knows who wrote it.

The oldest traces of "The House of the Rising Sun" reach back to 17th-century English folk ballads — songs about ruined lives, gambling houses, and the long road to nowhere. When the tune crossed the Atlantic, it settled into the mountains of Appalachia and the streets of New Orleans, sung by miners, prisoners, prostitutes, and drifters. Every generation rewrote the words. Every generation kept the melody.

In 1937, folklorist Alan Lomax recorded a sixteen-year-old miner's daughter named Georgia Turner singing it in Middlesboro, Kentucky. It was published in 1941. Woody Guthrie sang it. Lead Belly sang it. Josh White sang it. Bob Dylan put it on his debut album in 1962.

Then, on a single take in May 1964, four young men from Newcastle walked into a London studio — and everything changed.

The Animals recorded their version in fifteen minutes. It was released on June 19, 1964. By August, it was #1 in the United Kingdom. By September, it was #1 in America.

That same August, the U.S. Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. By the end of the year, American combat troops were on their way to Vietnam.

The song and the war arrived together.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🇺🇸 THE SONG THAT FOLLOWED A GENERATION

For the next decade, "The House of the Rising Sun" followed young American soldiers across the Pacific. It played on transistor radios in the barracks at Da Nang. It played on tape decks in the jungles of the Central Highlands. It played on jukeboxes in Saigon bars where GIs drank and did not talk about what they had seen that week.

Nobody had written it about the war.
And yet it fit the war perfectly.

"There is a house in New Orleans…" — the words spoke of a place a boy should never have gone. Of a mother's warning ignored. Of a life bound by things one could no longer escape.

For a generation of American soldiers — many of them barely eighteen — that was the war in a single verse.

58,220 of them never came home.
303,000 more came home wounded.
And the rest came home changed in ways the country had no vocabulary for.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

💫 BY THE NUMBERS

▸ 17th century — earliest folk roots in English balladry
▸ 1937 — first recorded by Alan Lomax in Middlesboro, Kentucky
▸ 1962 — Bob Dylan records it on his debut album
▸ May 1964 — The Animals record their version in one 15-minute take ▸ September 1964 — #1 in the United States
▸ 1964–1975 — the song follows American troops throughout the Vietnam War
▸ 58,220 — U.S. service members killed in Vietnam

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

⚙️ A NOTE ON THIS ARRANGEMENT

Most versions of "The House of the Rising Sun" — including the famous 1964 Animals recording — are performed as rock songs.

This one is not.

This is a dark ballad arrangement — slower, heavier, more haunted. Built for the memory of a soldier decades later, sitting in a quiet room, listening to a song that once played on a radio in a jungle he would never forget.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

⚠️ DISCLAIMER

This video is a music-only artistic and cultural reinterpretation.

The archival footage used in this video comes from public domain documentary sources depicting the Vietnam War era. It is used to honor the memory of the ordinary soldiers, civilians, and families — American, Vietnamese, and others — who lived through this period of history.

This video does not endorse, glorify, or take a political position on the Vietnam War. It is a lament for a generation. It is a tribute to a song that has outlived every war it ever accompanied.

Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.

He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.

All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.

This was Freddie Mercury's first single from the 1985 'Mr Bad Guy' album - his first solo album. The Director was David Mallet and it was shot entirely at Limehouse Studios in London. The single was released in the UK on 9th April 1985.

Freddie Mercury - I Was Born To Love You (Official Video Remastered)
https://www.youtube.com/user/freddiemercurysolo

On a June night in 2022, inside London’s O2 Arena, something happened that no fan expected — something so emotional, so powerful, that even Brian May himself broke down in tears.

During Love of My Life, the music paused… the lights softened… and suddenly, Freddie Mercury appeared on the screen, singing beside Brian as if time had folded in on itself. The crowd froze. Brian reached out his hand — and Freddie’s hologram reached back. For one impossible second, it looked like they were holding hands again.

This video uncovers the real story behind that moment:
• The hidden preparation for the emotional tribute
• The history and meaning behind Love of My Life
• Why this song still breaks Brian May’s heart
• The symbolic “final duet” between Freddie and Brian
• The crowd reaction that brought the entire arena to tears
• The deeper message Brian wanted to send that night
This is not just a performance.
It’s friendship. Grief. Healing.
The night Freddie came back — even if only in light.

This duet really speaks for itself, the king of Rock & the king of Pop! both amazingly talented men who made an impact on this world unable to explain through words... This is The Rock Rooms official rendition/version of this classic.

There Must Be More to Life Than This was a song originally written by Freddy Mercury. This song was written by Freddy in the late 1970s and was initially recorded In the 1981 live session recordings for their album Hot space! However, never officially made it onto the album

Years later Freddy recorded a solo version of the song and it was also recorded as a duet between Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson! but neither of these versions were released until posthumous compilations...

In 1971, four college students got together to form a rock band. Since then, that certain band called Queen have released 26 albums and sold over 300 million records worldwide. The popularity of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon is stronger than ever, 40 years on. But it was no bed of roses. No pleasure cruise. Queen had their share of kicks in the face, but they came through and this is how they did it, set against the backdrop of brilliant music and stunning live performances from every corner of the globe. In this film, for the first time, it is the band that tells their story. Featuring brand new interviews with the band and unseen archive footage (including their recently unearthed, first ever TV performance), it is a compelling story told with intelligence, wit, plenty of humor, and painful honesty.

The single of this song is 30 seconds longer than the album version: it has a longer synthesizer intro and a longer solo.

African National Congress in South Africa chose this song as their anthem in the late 1980s: Nelson Mandela was still in jail and the apartheid was still in place.

"I Want To Break Free"

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self-satisfied, I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love

It's strange but it's true, yeah
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh, how I want to be free, baby
Oh, how I want to be free
Oh, how I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without, living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own
So baby, can't you see?
I've got to break free

I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free
