Abbiamo dato tutto, con il cuore e con le competenze tecniche. Due facce della stessa medaglia imprescindibili.

In the financial year to 30 November 2024 Band Aid has awarded grants of £3m across 16 projects to date.
Activities in 2024 include:
Provision of life saving medicines and medical supplies
Access to basic healthcare for rural communities
Strengthening the support of health services in Tigray
Therapeutic food for malnourished children and vulnerable adults
Emergency grain supplies
Drought resistant crops
Income generating activities and vocational training
Construction of basic housing to support old and vulnerable people
Construction of emergency shelters for refugees
Provision of clean water and sanitation training across multiple refugee camps in Ethiopia
Training to prevent gender-based violence in communities
Hygiene and sanitation support for adolescent girls
Construction of schools and libraries, and provision of classroom furniture
Cash distributions for vulnerable households
Rehabilitation of boreholes and wells for schools and communities
School feeding programmes in Tigray to support children returning to education
The estimated number of beneficiaries totals more than 350,000 people.
Money raised from BandAid40 will continue to fund similar activities in Ethiopia and the surrounding countries.

📜 THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
Nobody knows who wrote it.
The oldest traces of "The House of the Rising Sun" reach back to 17th-century English folk ballads — songs about ruined lives, gambling houses, and the long road to nowhere. When the tune crossed the Atlantic, it settled into the mountains of Appalachia and the streets of New Orleans, sung by miners, prisoners, prostitutes, and drifters. Every generation rewrote the words. Every generation kept the melody.
In 1937, folklorist Alan Lomax recorded a sixteen-year-old miner's daughter named Georgia Turner singing it in Middlesboro, Kentucky. It was published in 1941. Woody Guthrie sang it. Lead Belly sang it. Josh White sang it. Bob Dylan put it on his debut album in 1962.
Then, on a single take in May 1964, four young men from Newcastle walked into a London studio — and everything changed.
The Animals recorded their version in fifteen minutes. It was released on June 19, 1964. By August, it was #1 in the United Kingdom. By September, it was #1 in America.
That same August, the U.S. Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. By the end of the year, American combat troops were on their way to Vietnam.
The song and the war arrived together.

🇺🇸 THE SONG THAT FOLLOWED A GENERATION
For the next decade, "The House of the Rising Sun" followed young American soldiers across the Pacific. It played on transistor radios in the barracks at Da Nang. It played on tape decks in the jungles of the Central Highlands. It played on jukeboxes in Saigon bars where GIs drank and did not talk about what they had seen that week.
Nobody had written it about the war.
And yet it fit the war perfectly.
"There is a house in New Orleans…" — the words spoke of a place a boy should never have gone. Of a mother's warning ignored. Of a life bound by things one could no longer escape.
For a generation of American soldiers — many of them barely eighteen — that was the war in a single verse.
58,220 of them never came home.
303,000 more came home wounded.
And the rest came home changed in ways the country had no vocabulary for.

Dal 1° ottobre è ripartita la campagna vaccinale autunnale e, con lei, la raccomandazione del Ministero della Salute sul #vaccino anti-Covid.
L’ultima circolare lo indica per le persone dai 60 anni in su, per gli ospiti delle RSA, per i soggetti fragili e per le donne in gravidanza in qualsiasi trimestre, nel post-partum e durante l’allattamento. Il #virus intanto continua a circolare in sordina e senza troppa attenzione. Resta aperta anche la questione delle dosi acquistate e mai usate: già a fine 2023 un’analisi di Politico stimava in almeno 215 milioni le dosi acquistate dai Paesi Ue e poi buttate, per un costo di circa 4 miliardi di euro, con l’Italia seconda solo alla Germania, con 49 milioni di dosi.
Quanto ci è costata, finora, questa scelta?
I numeri messi in fila da #MaddalenaLoy, giornalista che segue da vicino i lavori della Commissione d’inchiesta sul Covid, fanno impressione: “Dal 2021 a oggi per i vaccini abbiamo speso 2,6 miliardi. Se vi fate due calcoli sono 36 milioni di euro al mese, tutti i mesi, cioè più o meno 450 milioni di euro l’anno. Sapete che cosa ci potremmo fare con questi soldi? Faccio un esempio di stretta attualità: potremmo aggiungerli alle centinaia di milioni che si stanno spendendo per l’edilizia scolastica, oggetto delle proteste degli studenti”.
Una scelta, non una fatalità
Il bersaglio è chiaro, e ha un nome: “I soldi per l’edilizia scolastica questo governo li ha stanziati, ma se volessimo fare ancora di più potremmo destinarci 450 milioni l’anno. Invece Schillaci ha deciso di destinarli al vaccino Covid”. Il capitolo più amaro è però quello delle penali: “Nel 2023 abbiamo buttato 288 milioni di euro di sole penali per rinunciare a 24 milioni di dosi mai prodotte e mai consegnate, perché ritenute palesemente in eccesso. Nel 2023, grazie a Dio, nessuno pensava più a farsi cinquanta dosi all’anno: nessuno le richiedeva e nessuno continua a richiederle. Oggi nove dosi su dieci vengono buttate”.
Per Loy il problema è soprattutto di metodo, prima ancora che sanitario: “C’è un uso sconsiderato dei fondi pubblici, dei soldi dei contribuenti. Un ministro di questo governo decide di destinare i fondi dei contribuenti per comprare cose che nessuno vuole e che nessuno chiede”.
Più fiducia nell’antinfluenzale
Basta guardare l’adesione dello scorso anno: circa 11 milioni di italiani si sono vaccinati contro l’influenza, meno di un milione contro il Covid. Una sproporzione che non ammette paragoni e che, secondo Loy, va letta senza ingenuità: “Paradossalmente questo significa che le persone ritengono l’influenza più grave del Covid. Ma il fatto è che il vaccino per l’influenza è meno pericoloso di quello del Covid. E quel milione di persone, non credetevi, non sono cittadini che spontaneamente escono di casa e dicono: mi vado a fare il vaccino Covid”.
Il nodo della gravidanza
È il passaggio della circolare sulle future mamme a colpire di più. Gli anziani nelle RSA sono già un capitolo delicato, “poverini, forse per dar loro il colpo di grazia”, ma è la raccomandazione alle donne in gravidanza in qualsiasi trimestre a suonare come un campanello d’allarme: “È emerso sulle riviste scientifiche e nelle commissioni d’inchiesta che questo vaccino non aveva la garanzia di essere sicuro per tutti, soprattutto per le donne in gravidanza, e sono venuti fuori gli eventi avversi. Sono scandalizzata dal fatto che il Ministero della Salute continui a raccomandarlo proprio alle donne incinte, che sono più fragili”.
Che cosa dovrebbero fare allora le categorie indicate dal Ministero? “Noi di solito diciamo sempre: parla con il tuo medico di base. La cosa grave è che anche alcuni medici di base continuino a consigliarlo agli anziani. Non tutti, però evidentemente qualcuno c’è: un milione di dosi non è tanto, ma non è neanche pochissimo. Per i grandi anziani tutti dicevano che forse era meglio non andare a sfrugugliare e compromettere la situazione. Speriamo che questi medici siano il meno possibile”.

Una legge che chiedeva a un farmaco di fare ciò per cui non era mai stato autorizzato. Il decreto-legge 1° aprile 2021, n. 44, recante disposizioni urgenti per la prevenzione del contagio da SARS-CoV-2, imponeva a medici e operatori sanitari l’obbligo vaccinale proprio “per la prevenzione dell’infezione”. Da lì sarebbero arrivati il Green Pass e tutto ciò che ne è seguito. Cinque anni dopo, l’EMA chiarisce nelle risposte pubblicate in questi giorni che i vaccini Covid non sono mai stati autorizzati per prevenire la trasmissione da una persona all’altra: non nel 2020, non nel 2021, non oggi. Su questo cortocircuito si è aperta la seduta odierna della #commissione parlamentare d’inchiesta sul Covid.
A metterlo a fuoco è Giovanni #Frajese, che della commissione è membro tecnico e che per la prima volta ne è stato audito: “Rischio e beneficio sono due parole diventate in auge al tempo del Covid. Venivano usate da tutti per dire che qualunque rischio fosse minimo e il beneficio incredibilmente alto. Questa narrazione è stata ripetuta così tante volte da diventare scolpita sulla roccia, e chiunque provasse a dire qualcosa di diverso veniva ridicolizzato. Peccato che la scienza non parli per dogmi, ma per dati. Tengo a precisare che non ho conflitti di interesse con l’industria farmaceutica e non li ho mai avuti, e che le mie opinioni sono molto diverse da quelle dell’università presso cui lavoro, il Foro Italico di Roma. Ma ciò che presento non sono opinioni, e voglio che sia chiaro fin dall’inizio. Non lo erano nemmeno nel maggio del 2021, quando in Senato parlavo già del rischio di miocardite e pericardite negli adolescenti”.
