📜 THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Nobody knows who wrote it.

The oldest traces of "The House of the Rising Sun" reach back to 17th-century English folk ballads — songs about ruined lives, gambling houses, and the long road to nowhere. When the tune crossed the Atlantic, it settled into the mountains of Appalachia and the streets of New Orleans, sung by miners, prisoners, prostitutes, and drifters. Every generation rewrote the words. Every generation kept the melody.

In 1937, folklorist Alan Lomax recorded a sixteen-year-old miner's daughter named Georgia Turner singing it in Middlesboro, Kentucky. It was published in 1941. Woody Guthrie sang it. Lead Belly sang it. Josh White sang it. Bob Dylan put it on his debut album in 1962.

Then, on a single take in May 1964, four young men from Newcastle walked into a London studio — and everything changed.

The Animals recorded their version in fifteen minutes. It was released on June 19, 1964. By August, it was #1 in the United Kingdom. By September, it was #1 in America.

That same August, the U.S. Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. By the end of the year, American combat troops were on their way to Vietnam.

The song and the war arrived together.

🇺🇸 THE SONG THAT FOLLOWED A GENERATION

For the next decade, "The House of the Rising Sun" followed young American soldiers across the Pacific. It played on transistor radios in the barracks at Da Nang. It played on tape decks in the jungles of the Central Highlands. It played on jukeboxes in Saigon bars where GIs drank and did not talk about what they had seen that week.

Nobody had written it about the war.
And yet it fit the war perfectly.

"There is a house in New Orleans…" — the words spoke of a place a boy should never have gone. Of a mother's warning ignored. Of a life bound by things one could no longer escape.

For a generation of American soldiers — many of them barely eighteen — that was the war in a single verse.

58,220 of them never came home.
303,000 more came home wounded.
And the rest came home changed in ways the country had no vocabulary for.

"Under Pressure" is a song by the British rock band Queen and singer David Bowie. Originally released as a single in October 1981, it was later included on Queen's 1982 album Hot Space. The song reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Queen's second number-one hit in their home country (after 1975's "Bohemian Rhapsody", which topped the chart for nine weeks) and Bowie's third (after the 1975 reissue of "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes" in 1980). The song charted in the top 10 in more than ten countries around the world, and peaked at No. 29 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in January 1982.

The song has been described as a "monster rock track that stood out" on the Hot Space album, as well as "an incredibly powerful and poignant pop song". It was listed at number 31 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s, and voted the second best collaboration of all time in a poll by Rolling Stone magazine. It was played live at every Queen concert from 1981 until the end of the band's touring career in 1986.
Live recordings appear on the Queen live albums Queen Rock Montreal and Live at Wembley '86. The song was included on some editions of Queen's first Greatest Hits compilations, such as the original 1981 Elektra release in the US. It is included on the band's compilation albums Greatest Hits II, Classic Queen, and Absolute Greatest as well as Bowie compilations such as Best of Bowie (2002), The Platinum Collection (2005), Nothing Has Changed (2014), Legacy (2016), and Re:Call 3 (2017).

Quanto spazio resta al dissenso nelle nostre democrazie? Lo sguardo si allarga all’Europa, tra lo Scudo democratico contro le ingerenze straniere, le parole di Ursula von der Leyen contro ultranazionalisti e antieuropeisti e il confine tra contrasto alla disinformazione e libertà di espressione. Parleremo anche della proposta di una nuova associazione tra Canada e UE e della reazione di Trump.

Sul fronte Russia-Ucraina analizzeremo il racconto mediatico del presunto attentato a Zelensky e le successive smentite, il voto americano sulle nuove sanzioni, gli allarmi polacchi e le elezioni della Duma segnate dall’assenza di una reale opposizione. Affronteremo inoltre le contestazioni russe all’ONU sui dati delle vittime di Bucha e la militarizzazione dello spazio, con le reazioni di Mosca e Pechino agli armamenti statunitensi in orbita.

Il rapporto tra potere e libertà d’informazione torna nel caso degli autori di “Naza”, bersaglio di accuse e minacce di revoca della cittadinanza in Israele. Spazio anche al Medio Oriente: le dichiarazioni di Crosetto sull’intervento della Marina nel Mar Rosso, la posizione iraniana sulla fine dell’ordine unipolare e la risoluzione della Camera americana che chiede di fermare le operazioni in Iran o ottenere l’autorizzazione del Congresso.

Ci occuperemo poi del lotto contaminato di vaccino veterinario collegato alla morte di cani in Russia, distinguendo gli accertamenti dalle ipotesi di sabotaggio avanzate dall’azienda.

Infine, l’intelligenza artificiale: Amodei accusa l’industria di aver mentito sui rischi, mentre Trump liquida gli allarmi come bufale. Intanto si moltiplicano i progetti di guida autonoma in Europa.

BAND AID - How the Money is Spent

In the financial year to 30 November 2024 Band Aid has awarded grants of £3m across 16 projects to date.
Activities in 2024 include:

Provision of life saving medicines and medical supplies
Access to basic healthcare for rural communities
Strengthening the support of health services in Tigray
Therapeutic food for malnourished children and vulnerable adults
Emergency grain supplies
Drought resistant crops
Income generating activities and vocational training
Construction of basic housing to support old and vulnerable people
Construction of emergency shelters for refugees
Provision of clean water and sanitation training across multiple refugee camps in Ethiopia
Training to prevent gender-based violence in communities
Hygiene and sanitation support for adolescent girls
Construction of schools and libraries, and provision of classroom furniture
Cash distributions for vulnerable households
Rehabilitation of boreholes and wells for schools and communities
School feeding programmes in Tigray to support children returning to education

The estimated number of beneficiaries totals more than 350,000 people.

Money raised from BandAid40 will continue to fund similar activities in Ethiopia and the surrounding countries.

Il rapporto OASI del Cergas-Bocconi ha stimato che servirebbero circa 40 miliardi di euro per riequilibrare il Servizio Sanitario Nazionale, mentre l'ultimo report dell'Osservatorio Europeo dell'OMS segnala carenze strutturali di personale - in particolare infermieristico - e squilibri territoriali nell'offerta di cura. Numeri che si intrecciano a un tema più profondo, quello della preparazione della classe medica, al centro di una riflessione condivisa: "Non abbiamo la preparazione adeguata".

Sul fronte economico, il discorso si allarga agli extraprofitti sui beni primari. Il legislatore italiano è già intervenuto in passato su casi simili: nel 2022 con un prelievo del 50% sui guadagni straordinari delle società energetiche, nel 2023 con una misura analoga - poi ridimensionata - sul settore bancario. Interventi emergenziali, non un principio sistematico.
